The GATE
Gaining Access to Training and Employment

The GATE is committed to empowering residents in the community, by eliminating barriers to productive employment. These may include a lack of access to employment opportunities, marketable employment/job skills, academic deficiencies, adequate transportation, inadequate childcare, health care issues as well as perceived barriers. An array of services and resources are offered by the GATE and its partners to assist residents in overcoming these barriers.

Program Overview
The GATE (Gaining Access To Training and Employment) is an employment initiative designed to provide residents in need of services that will prepare them for employment. The services include but are not limited to the following:

  • Employability Assessment
  • Career Counseling
  • Occupational Skills Training
  • Career Readiness Workshops
  • Career Employment Placement
  • Retention Services
  • Pre-Employment Physicals
  • Health Services
  • Career Net Lab/Self Directed Job Search
  • Literacy
  • Pre-GED/GED
  • Computerized PSAT and SAT Prep
  • Life Skills
  • Career Planning

Qualifications for Services
If you can answer “yes” to the following requirements, then you are eligible to participate in the GATE:

  • Reside in Baltimore City
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a good attitude and ready to work
  • Willing to adhere to a personalized employability program

At the present time there is no charge for services at the GATE. Entry into the GATE varies according to the requirements placed by the funding entity.

Length of Time to Complete the GATE
Following orientation, academic testing and a full psycho-social assessment (approximately 2 days), recommendations for placement into the GATE or with one of the GATE Partners will be offered to the customer. If a customer is placed into one of the occupational skills training or academic courses the completion of training may vary. All customers must complete a ten-day employment enhancement readiness workshop.

The GATE offers a variety of career employment positions based on the interest, educational and occupations skills level of each customer. The career areas include but are not limited to the following:

  • Customer Service
  • Administrative Support
  • Information Systems
  • Administrative Assistants
  • Environmental Services

Training Opportunities
All GATE customers are encouraged to complete the following skills training:

  • Basic Introduction to Computers
  • Internet Access

Occupational Skills Training
The GATE also offers a variety of occupational skills for interested customers, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Office Automation
  • Building Trades
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Geriatric Nursing Assistant
  • Web Pages Design
  • Computer Skills
  • Lead Abatement
